Who we are
The Freedom of Thought Initiative is an independent international research programme founded and directed by Masud Zakaria and hosted by Global Open Education. It is a philosophical and interdisciplinary research initiative investigating the conditions of intellectual freedom and knowledge production — from individual intellectual development through education, institutions, and intellectual culture to the collective capacity of societies to produce knowledge.
We work in the tradition of academic research institutes, philosophy centres, and public intellectual platforms: producing books, working papers, and essays; convening seminars, lectures, and conferences; and building an international network of researchers and partner institutions.
The initiative remains academically independent. It is non-political, non-activist, and non-commercial. Its collaborations with universities and institutes are governed by scholarly standards alone.
Working conception
What do we mean by freedom of thought?
The Freedom of Thought is not primarily a project about the legal right to think or express an opinion. It is a philosophical inquiry into what it means for a human being to live an intellectually free life.
We ask whether a person is genuinely capable of questioning inherited assumptions, examining ideas, confronting evidence, revising understanding, developing intellectual agency, and continuing an open intellectual journey.
We are particularly interested in how intellectual development becomes constrained by dogmatism, conformity, imitation, fear, institutional pressures, political and social environments, educational systems, inherited assumptions, and other forms of intellectual closure.
At the collective level, we ask how these individual conditions affect the intellectual life of societies: their capacity to question, renew ideas, conduct research, produce knowledge, and develop intellectually.
Our current conception is a working proposition rather than a finished theory. The research itself will test, refine, challenge, and potentially develop this conception.

Academic affiliation
Part of the initiative's work is developed in the context of Masud Zakaria's doctoral (Ed.D.) research at Edgewood University, an academic collaboration supporting scholarship on education, intellectual freedom, and the philosophy of learning.
